Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  1. To undertake specialist diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy. Where required obtain competencies in additional endoscopic procedures to help with delivery of the service.
  2. Accept and triage direct referrals from Primary and Secondary care for endoscopic procedures.
  3. Be responsible for the workforce strategy, education and training of the endoscopy workforce.
  4. To work closely with senior management of all the endoscopy users to develop clinical services within the speciality and improve the quality of care being delivered to patients.
  5. Work with Clinical Research Department to initiate and be involved in national research programmes to ensure evidence based practice is embedded in all aspects of care and treatment.
  6. Ensure all endoscopy related audits are delivered on time.
  7. Support Outpatient service through relevant specialist clinics (IDA/Barretts/Surveillance).
  8. Help the unit maintain JAG accreditation through above.

                                               

 

Person specification

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Registered nurse.
  • BSc/Post Graduate Diploma .
  • JAG Certified nurse.
  • JAG courses in polypectomy and upper GI therapeutics.
  • Post-grad studies in management, research methods, education and leadership
  • Accredited Bowel Cancer screener.
Desirable criteria
  • Working towards nurse prescriber course
  • Course in capsule endoscopy

Experience and Skills

Essential criteria
  • Able to independently perform upper and lower GI endoscopic procedures.
  • Experience of the management of complex issues.
  • Understand patient safety issues – safeguarding adults and children.
  • Able to perform therapeutics, e.g polypectomy, band ligation, EMR
  • Understand staff development and empowerment.
  • Evidence highly developed communication skills.
  • Able to demonstrate assertiveness, tact and diplomacy appropriately.
  • Evidence of regular audit
  • Able to prioritise own workload and that of others, demonstrating effective time management and organisational skills.
Desirable criteria
  • Evidence of benchmarking e.g. JAG key performance indicators.
  • Minimum of 1000 colonoscopies
  • Minimum of 1000 gastroscopies
  • Minimum of 1000 flexible sigmoidoscopies

Management

Essential criteria
  • Significant management and leadership experience
  • Able to make operational judgements involving highly complex/facts/situations
  • Have the ability to manage conflicting views and reconcile inter and intra professional differences of opinion.
  • Evidence of persuasive and strong influencing skills and the ability to manage conflict.
  • Evidence of involvement in policy and practice change.
  • Evidence of relevant involvement in meeting the Trust’s Quality and patient Safety objectives.
  • Evidence full knowledge and understanding of GRS and JAG.

Research and Development

Essential criteria
  • Experience in presenting to a clinical audience
  • Experience of continuous quality improvement
