Job overview

To work as a Consultant Paediatrician with resident duties in our integrated families division. The post holder will be based at Blackpool Teaching Hospital. There is a 1 in 9 consultant of the week system in place when all normal duties are cancelled, which includes non resident weekend cover. They cover the wards, neonatal unit, acute child protection referrals and are supported by a second consultant of the week 9am-1pm Monday-Friday. The post holder also contributes to a 1 in 5 resident duty rota covering Monday-Thursday on our wards, with no other non-resident duties, as well as the second consultant of the week. Lieu off time is given for the resident and non-resident on call duties, as well as pro-rata time to make up for missed activity during the consultant of the week duties. The post holder will also complete outpatient clinics in the hospital.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will be appointed as a Locum Consultant Paediatrician with Resident Duties, joining our team of 15 WTE consultants delivering integrated paediatric care to Blackpool, Fylde and Wyre.

 The successful candidate will be responsible for the management of patients in their direct care and under the care of other consultant colleagues with shared responsibilities as paediatric team for cross cover and in patient’s management.

Applicants must have full registration with the General Medical Council and have entry on the specialist Register or in receipt of CCT within 6 months of interview dates, have MRCPCH or equivalent and higher professional training in Paediatrics. We are particularly happy to support Trainee’s transitions through the end of training who wish to gain experience and would welcome discussions.

Whilst this is offered a locum post for 6-12 months, part time working and shorter post times can be considered.  A substantive appointment process will also be made in the future so this post may allow such an applicant to gain experience with the team prior to applying for such a post.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Inclusion on the Specialist Register or eligible for inclusion within 6 months of interview date
  • Full registration with the GMC
  • MB ChB or equivalent
  • MRCP or equivalent
Desirable criteria
  • Higher degree (MD/PhD)

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Excellent communication skills – both oral and written.
  • Effective teaching skills
  • Ability to organise and prioritise workload and to delegate responsibility and supervise staff.
  • Ability to motivate and inspire a multi-disciplinary team and work sensitively within teams and across organisations
  • Involvement and evidence of implementation of service development and managing change in a healthcare setting
  • Leadership skills- ability to take responsibility, show leadership and make decisions
